Sangres Art Guild

Westcliffe, CO

Member Meeting November 15

This month’s SAG membership meeting is on Thursday, November 15 at 5:15 pm at the Cliff Lanes community room.

The meeting will start promptly at 5:15 pm with a demo by Mary Morrison of Golden Artist Colors. She’ll be coming from Denver to inform us about Golden’s line of acrylic artist’s paints and mediums, especially the Golden Open line.

Golden Open is a slow drying acrylic paint that mimics oil paint for artists wanting more time to smoosh around their colors. Mary will also have free samples.

The business side of the meeting will follow Mary’s presentation. Please plan on coming to this meeting to support the Guild and help justify Mary’s trip here and back to Denver. I’ve seen her demo – she’s good.

Next month, the scheduled December 20th meeting will be canceled in lieu of having a Christmas party at the gallery during the Holiday Show reception December 1, 4-7.  Come to the reception December 1st and cast your vote to replace two “retiring” SAG Board of Directors this year.  We need your vote!

Kudos to Sharon, Carol, Lynn, Eve and Curt

Congratulations go to SAG’s Sharon Langfeldt and Carol Martinez for awards won during the Zonta Club of Royal Gorge’s 13th annual Artful Women Exhibition! Carol won 1st place in photography with her pic “Savvy” and Sharon won Judge’s Choice for her photo “Soup Kitchen Server”. Way to go gals!

Also belated congrats to SAG’s Eve Nagode for winning two awards at the Arkansas Valley Artist Showcase. Her photos “Snow Bunnies” and “Fly Like a BIrd (Only Slower)” won 1st Place and Honorable mention. And SAG’s Lynn Chapman took home a 3rd Place in the November 2 First Friday Art Walk in Pueblo. That’s the way to do it!

Yours Truly (Curt) got 1st Place in the Colorado Watercolor Society’s Member Show in Denver a couple weeks ago for my painting “Under Chapin Mesa”. Also just heard that I received the Southern Colorado Watercolor Society Award at their national level Aquarius Show for my work “Black Canyon Sunset”. Woohoo!

Kudos Ken, Sharon, Lorie & Sarah!

Kudos go out to SAG member Ken Hartman for winning Best of Show at the Colorado Mountain Plein Air Festival in Salida on September 22.

More Kudos to SAG member and Vice President Sharon Langfeldt for having her photograph “Crystals in the Stream” chosen for the prestigious international Art of Photography Show 2012 at the San Diego Art Institute. Her’s was one in 200 out of nearly 17,000 entries chosen for the competition. See the press about Sharon in the Wet Mountain Tribune’s September 27 issue.

Still more kudos go out to Lorie Merfeld-Batson and Sarah Woods for being two of the Guild’s own chosen to exhibit in the annual Art for the Sangres exhibit, a benefit for the San Isabel Land Protection Trust. While Sarah is an “old hand” at the exhibit, having shown every year of the event, this is Lorie’s first year. Both artists had some spectacular work at the exhibit on September 29.

Way to go, SAG members!

Miss the September Meeting?

Did you miss the Guild meeting Thursday (Sept. 20)? You missed some good story telling, humor, artistic fellowship and a great demonstration of Conte crayon by Gerald Merfeld.

We updated membership on money stuff and summer goings-on, as well as what the future may hold for the Guild. We also talked about Arts Hullabaloo (October 6) and the Plein Air Paint-out (October 4-6). Preparations for both are going well. Be sure to participate!

The agenda for the meeting is posted on the SAG Meetings page. See what you missed. Details will come later when the minutes are issued.

The Art Guild is your Guild and it needs your help. To paraphrase a famous quote: ask not what your Guild can do for you, but rather what you can do for your Guild.

We are in need of help seeking grants and other sources of funding. We also need a little help with Arts Hullabaloo. Posters need to be put up in town, post cards distributed, and sponsors sought. If you can contribute in any way, even a small one, please let Angie know (for Hullabaloo) or Curt for grants.

Review the proposal for how the gallery will be run next year. Its a bit different. Give your feedback.

Don’t miss the October meeting! Its on October 18 and Sarah Woods will talk about what kind of art makes a good print. Should be good. Mark your calendars now. Hope to see you then.

September Membership Meeting

Membership meetings will resume!  Come to the September 20 meeting at Cliff Lanes at 5:15 p.m. and learn about Guild happenings over the summer and what the future brings.  The valley’s own Gerald Merfeld will demonstrate conte crayon drawing.  Come and re-connect with fellow artists.  The public is welcome.
